Colón Tours
Fashion, food, market, history and Toledo tours; meeting point at Plaza del Callao, and there's a free intro tour.

Mercado de San Miguel
A must — historic iron-and-glass market with vermouth, cheese, pickles and sweet treats.
Palacio de Cristal
Inside Retiro park; was closed to visitors that day but beautiful from outside, with a turtle pond in front.
Ten con Ten
Calle de Ayala 6; buzzing and packed — ask for the quieter section. Order the avocado salad with orange and pine nuts.
Plaza Mayor
Walk in through the stone archways to the arcaded square with terrace cafés and the Felipe III statue.
Rosaleda del Parque del Retiro
Inside Retiro park — roses bloom mid-May to June, best time to visit.
Gran Vía
Great area for a shopping day — perfect even on a drizzly, cloudy morning.
Plaza del Callao
Rooftop terraces here give a panorama over Gran Vía towards Teatro Real and the Royal Palace.
Puerta del Sol
Stand on the Km 0 plaque — the origin point of Spain's radial roads — for the classic photo.
Palacio Real de Madrid
Right next to Almudena Cathedral — easy to combine the two.

Iberian ham counter inside the market; jamón de bellota from €25.
Mercado de la Paz
Neighbourhood food market with ham, olive and croquette counters.

Visible on the skyline from the Callao rooftop viewpoints.
